Purpose of the Activity: To provide a robust platform for the expression of interest and promote

research among academicians, research scholars and students.

Activity: Prof. (Dr.) Aravind Mulimani, Chairman, Department of Geography, Karnatak University,

Dharwad, Karnataka, delivered a keynote address, while delegates from various states of the

country presented their research papers either offline or in online mode.

Outcome: Delegates of the conference have come up with probable solutions to the environmental

issues emerged across the globe.

Report of the activity:

The Research Committee and Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the S. I. A. College of Higher Education, Dombivli (E) in association with the Bombay Geographical Association (BGA) C/O Department of Geography, University of Mumbai, Lokmanya Tilak Bhavan, CST Road, Kalina, Santacruz (E), Mumbai – 400 098 organized a National Level Conference, on Saturday, 17th February 2024 in the Auditorium of The S. I. A. College of Higher Education, Dombivli (E). The National Level Conference on Environment, Development and Sustainability: An Inclusive Approach for Resilient Future, was organized to provide a robust platform for promoting research among academicians, research scholars and students for the enhancement of their knowledge and skills essential to solve various environmental issues and to discuss the environmental challenges and suggest possible solutions to them.

The conference began at 10.00 a.m. with the tradition of lighting the lamp and pooja of goddess Saraswati followed by the Mumbai University and South Indian Association Songs. After welcoming the dignitaries and delegates, Mrs. Booma Halpeth, vice principal, put forth the theme of the conference. As the head of the institution, Principal Dr. Padmaja Arvind addressed the conference. She revealed the purpose behind organizing this conference and spoke about various developmental activities being conducted in the college. It was followed by the address of Hon’ble Shri. K. V. Ranganathan sir, President of the South Indian Association, Dombivli. Sir spoke about the need for sustainable development. Mrs. Bharti Unni, President of B.G.A. spoke about the role, functioning and achievements of B.G.A. She also talked about the activities conducted by the Association and its role in spreading geographical knowledge among the masses. Dr. Nitinkumar M. Patil, Convener of the conference, introduced the keynote speaker Prof. Aravind Mulimani, Chairman, Department of Geography, Karnatak University, Dharwad, Karnataka. This was followed by the felicitation of the guests. In the keynote address, while explaining the present global scenario of the environment Prof. Aravind Mulimani highlighted some of the issues including over-exploitation of natural resources, environmental pollution and explosion of human population. He mentioned that no natural resource is a waste e.g. no waste land is there, only priority of land use changes. Global warming is one of the major environmental challenges the entire human race is facing today. Thus, there is an urgent need to understand it thoroughly he said. Mrs. Manju Sasikumar expressed the vote of thanks. Mr. Tarun Kuckian and Mrs. Salochana Nagdev hosted the inaugural function. In all four technical sessions of the conference were conducted parallelly, consisting of three offline and one online session.

Session-I

The first technical session was devoted to the theme of Natural Resource Conservation. This session was chaired by Dr. Dipesh Manohar Karmarkar, Associate Professor, Smt. CHM College Ulhasnagar – 03. In this session, the research papers were presented by Mr. Shridhar Adiandhra, Prof. Aravind Mulimani, Dr. Hasitkumar Nagariya, Mr. Mahesh Kandalkar, Dr. Sumant Autade, Mr. Siddhant Shinde, Dr. Nitinkumar M. Patil, Mr. Rooshikesh Jade, Dr. Preeti Sumant Autade and Mr. Aditya Vilankar.

Session-II

            The theme for this session was Policy Initiatives for Sustainable Development. The session was chaired by Dr. Preeti Sumant Autade, Associate Professor, Swami Vivekanand Night College, Dombivli (E). In this session, the research papers were presented by Dr. Shilpa Malani, Miss. Sanskriti Bhoir, Mrs. Shubhangi Daptardar, Miss. Sejal Suresh Mahajan, Mr. Sujith Kalathil, Mr. Mukul Kulkarni, Mr. Tarun Kuckian, Mrs. Salochana Nagdev, Mrs. Babita Nagdev, Mr. Narayan Lad, Mrs. Medha Vijay Dhapre, Mrs. Megha Vighnesh and Ms. Kavita Nadar.

Session-III

            The theme of this session was the Role of Information Technology for Sustainable Development. In addition, papers related to the other themes associated with the main theme of the conference were also presented in this session. The session was chaired by Mrs. Medha Vijay Dhapre, Assistant Professor, Kirti College, Dadar (W), Mumbai. Online Technical Session

The online technical session was devoted to the themes viz. Natural Resource Conservation, Policy Initiatives for Sustainable Development, Role of Information Technology for Sustainable Development and other relevant themes. This session was chaired by Dr. Sumant Eknath Autade, Associate Professor, Swami Vivekanand Night College Dombivli (E) and Mr. Ashutosh Saxena, Assistant Professor, Jaihind College, Mumbai. In all 51 Research Papers, both in the offline and online modes were presented by 64 Registered delegates of the conference. The conference was winded up with the valedictory function which was hosted by Mrs. Rasika Shinde who welcomed the guests and delegates. Dr. Nitinkumar M. Patil, convener of the conference, introduced the chief guest, former principal Dr. Hemant Pednekar. The summary of the conference was prepared by Mrs. Shweta Gopalakrishnan and Mrs. Manju Sasikumar, and presented by Mrs. Shweta Gopalakrishnan. This was followed by a brief report presented by the chairmen of both offline and online technical sessions. The chief guest of the conference Dr. Hemant Pednekar addressed the gathering. His speech was focused on sustainable practices in daily life. It was followed by the address of Dr. Savitsmita Chawan, former chairman of BGA. In her speech, she highlighted the importance of resource conservation in sustainable development. Dr. Ramesh Gavit, treasurer, BGA shared his views on the organization of the conference. In all four participants shared their views about the conference. Mrs. Babita Nagdev expressed the vote of thanks. The Conference ended by singing the national anthem.

The aim of social service in the past was essentially curative and efforts were directed towards only relief measures.NSS since its inception on September 24,1969, has involved both students and teachers in the task of national development.It has also provided the opportunity to the students and the youth of India to serve the nation at grass root level.NSS has always taken concrete steps in making campus relevant to the needs of the community.

In order to achieve the goals such as:

  • Creating awareness about the role of NSS in social development and personal development.
  • Preserving our ethics and values through the temporal changes
  • Releasing any kind of inhibitions while doing your duties towards the society.

2019 marks 50 years i.e. Golden Jubliee of NSS’s continuous services to community as a whole and 150th year celebration of birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The S.I.A. College of Higher Education is also celebrating 10 years of academic excellence and we are glad to collaborate with University of Mumbai’s N.S.S unit to conduct the conference.The National Conference has been scheduled on Saturday, 08th February 2020.
