About Department

The Commerce department consists of the right mix of experienced and young teaching faculty who are capable of adding freshness to the traditional methods of teaching and learning. The students coming to the department also range from the meritorious ones to the moderate and average learners, who need guidance and support to score academically. The commerce department strives to provide a right mix of teaching and learning styles coupled with co-curricular and extra-curricular activities that will be able to address the needs of both- the high achievers as well as the slow learners. The department arranges for subject expert lectures to guide students of final year and resolve their examination-related queries. Students of Commerce are taken to field visits to Parle Biscuit factory to provide exposure to actual working of factories.

Objectives:

  • To cater to the needs of the diverse set of students, and ensure that lectures have something for all kinds of learners

  • To encourage students to participate in various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities to build confidence and develop positive attitude

Club:

The Calibre Commerce Club organizes various co-curricular activities specially for the students of Commerce department, where they can showcase their skills and explore their hidden talents. The club also provides a platform for the students to address their fears, and face their challenges, which will improve their confidence and shape their personality. The club organizes activities like Power Point Presentation competition, Elocution competition, Quiz, and public speaking, among others.

Fest:

Eminence is the inter-collegiate fest organized by the Calibre commerce club, on the 12th of February, ever year. The fest consists of various competitions organized for students within as well as outside the college. It is a mega-event for the department, which takes place with lot of fanfare and excitement. The students who are a part of the organizing committee learn various soft skills and life skills like leadership, crisis management, organization, planning and so on during the event. Eminence was organized online during the pandemic, which also received much appreciation from the participants.

Orientation session was organized for FYBCOM students for the batch of 2023-24 on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at 11 am. Students were divided into A and B division, and were asked to sit in G4 and G5 respectively. The orientation started with principal mam addressing the students, welcoming them on their first day, followed by teachers providing information regarding various aspects. Students of SY and TY also shared their experiences. Committee orientations followed. FY students also were given indoor tour of the college.

Calibre Commerce Club organised Power point presentation competition on 8th July 2023.

The main objective of the event is to inculcate presenting skills public speaking and to increase confidence amongst students. The event was judged by Mrs. SAISREE from the department of Information Technology.

Overall 11 groups participated in the event. Total 18 participants were present 14 female and 4 male students.

Outcome: Students were able to improve their presentation skills and confidence in addressing a crowd.

Activity Highlights:

The SIA College of Higher Education Dombivli East, Departments of Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) and Management Studies (B.M.S.) organised a study tour visit to Maharashtra Legislative Assembly i.e Vidhan Bhavan on Thursday, 29th Feb 2024 as a part of their Foundation Couse. The purpose of the visit was to provide students with firsthand exposure to the workings of the legislative assembly and council.

Students visited both the houses of Assembly viz. ‘Vidhan Sabha’ and ‘Vishan Parishad’. All students visited the Assembly with great enthusiasm.

Outcome:

  1. Understanding of Legislative Processes: Students gained a deeper understanding of the legislative processes, including the role of elected representatives, the importance of debates, and the passage of bills.
  2. Civic Engagement: The visit encouraged students to become more actively involved in civic affairs and understand the significance of participating in the democratic process.

Calibre Commerce Club (CCC) of BCOM department had organized Eminence an Inter-Collegiate event on Friday i.e.,24th February 2023.Total 7 competitions were organised under Eminence 2023.

Visit to Bombay High Court

Department of Commerce (B.Com) and Department of Management Studies (B.M.S.) organised a study tour visit to Bombay High Court on Friday, 31st March 2023 as a part of their Foundation Couse. Objective of the visit was to create awareness about the functioning of Bombay High Court, experience live court proceedings, observe cases related to violation of human rights. After experiencing the court proceedings, students explored the museum that is inside the Bombay High Court. At museum they discovered the history of Bombay, which was earlier a land of seven islands. Students observed the working of Advocates, nature of duties of judicial officers during the live court proceedings, beautiful carvings of high court and the history of Bombay. Students got a practical exposure of Indian judiciary system. A total of 98 students of FYBCOM, SYBCOM & FYBMS had attended the visit from which 43 were male participants and 55 female participants.

A session on creating awareness regarding consumer rights was organized by BCOM and BAF department in association with Shivsena Grahak Sanrakshan Kendra, Dombivli on 15th March 2023 at 11 am in G6 Classroom. The session began with welcome and felicitation of Mr. Vishal Shete, Mr. Bhai Panavdikar, Mr. Kailash Sanas and Mr. Nitin Patil. Mr. Panavdikar felicitated principal with shawl. Thereafter, Mr. Vishal Shete went on to enlighten the students on the importance of having knowledge regarding the rights  we have as a consumer. Mr. Mahesh Patil, Corporator of Dombivli Area presented himself briefly to grace the event. He was felicitated by President Shri. K V Ranganathan. He also addressed the students and asked them to become aware of their rights and seek help of shivsena members in case of any need.

Bachelor of Commerce (BCom.) Department of The SIA College of Higher Education Dombivli East organised a session on the topic: “Ensuring Financial Freedom” with the objective of creating financial awareness among students of TYBCOM on Wednesday, 1st March 2023 at 9.30 am in the auditorium. The session was conducted by Mr. Sandeep Baravkar, President of Rotary Club of Dombivli and partner in one of the sponsors of intercollege fest EMINENCE 2023, i.e. SRS Financial Services LLP.

The session started at 9.30 am with a formal welcome of the guests by Miss. Jyotsna Patil, student of TYBCOM. Thereafter, Mr. Sandeep took-over the session and explained the importance of investing in the right avenues to ensure that future is secure. Mr. Sandeep used the right mix of pictures, videos and real-life case stories to explain how timely investment in mutual funds and other market instruments can help build a large pool of money which can help to fulfil all goals. He advised the students to start with goal setting, prioritizing the goals, and then investing small amounts through SIPs so that enough funds can be generated to achieve all dreams.

Outcome:

The students learnt about goal setting and how to become financially independent by investing in the right sources. 78 male and 67 female beneficiaries attended the session.

Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) Department of The Sia College of Higher Education Dombivli East organised a session on the topic Human Rights with the objective to create awareness about the primary rights of the citizens which are justifiable and written in the constitution, among the students of FYBCOM on Friday, 10th March 2023 at 9 am in the auditorium. The session was conducted by Advocate Pawan Jaichandani, Bombay High Court. Teacher in charge for the session was Dr. Shilpa Malani.

Sir explained us how the constitution was formed, what were the reasons for framing the constitution and he explained us about the fundamental rights of the Indian citizens. Sir also shared live cases of human rights violation handled by him.

The session ended with a round of discussion and a vote of thanks.

Outcome:
The participants came to know about basics of human rights, when and how it can be violated, what are fundamental rights, how the constitution came into force and where are we supposed to approach when the rights are violated.

This session was attended by 82 Female beneficiaries and 27 Male beneficiaries i.e a total of  109 students attended the session.

Calibre Commerce Club of B.com Department has organised Industrial visit for the students of B.com department on 4th March, 2023 at Bunty Foods Pvt. Ltd.(Parle Products) Ambernath. Mr. Nishikant Pathak- Manager of production unit provided useful information about the products of Parle. Production process of Parle Biscuits and confectionery were made known through presentation.

Visit to the factory was made and the actual process of mixing, backing, cooling and packing of Parle G biscuits was shown to the students.

Department of The Sia College of Higher Education Dombivli East organised a session on the topic Personal finance with the objective to create financial awareness among students of FYBCOM and SYBCOM on Tuesday, 28th February 2022 at 10.10 am in the auditorium. The session was conducted by Title Sponsor of our intercollege fest EMINENCE 2023 i.e M/s Hasan Wangde Investments of Navi Mumbai. He is a registered mutual fund distributor & Authorized sub-broker with BSE & NSE. Hasan sir explained the purpose of investment and shared the formula with all of us of how to become rich. He explained that 10% of our earnings should be kept for emergency, 20% should be invested, 10% for personal development, 10% for charity and remaining 50% for expenses.

Outcome: The participants came to know about basic money management skills and the proper use of consumer credit, helping them stay financially healthy.

In view of addressing the post-pandemic behavioural issues among students like declining focus and loss of attentiveness, three separate counselling sessions for F.Y.B. Com Div. A, B and C were conducted on 20th and 23rd of February 2023 by Miss. Pratyancha Padake, Counsellor, The S. I, A. College of Higher Education, Dombivli (E). The main aim of these sessions was to discuss with students about mental health and the importance of stress management.

In the beginning, miss Pratyancha conveyed the importance and need for student counselling. She insisted students for sharing their experiences on curricular and co-curricular activities being conducted in the college. It helped her in building a rapport with the students. After getting replies from students, she discussed the importance of mental health and stress management in student life. Followed by this, she gave some guidelines for personality development with the enhancement of the knowledge-acquiring capacity of the students.

Self-respect, physical exercise, eating nutritious food, avoiding addiction, taking enough sleep, surrounding onself by good people, and maintaining positive attitude are some of the measures madam suggested for the enhancement of mental health and reducing stress levels among students. In all 129 (54 Male and 75 Female) students were counselled in the activity.

Calibre commerce club along with discipline committee organized activity on code of conduct of the college for all first year students on 3rd February 2023. The purpose was to make students aware about basic code of conduct related to discipline, attendance, dress code, prohibition of mobile phone and other general rules. Student volunteers made presentations using posters and charts. Total 274 students attended the presentation out of which 157 were girls and 117 were boys.

The Commerce Department in collaboration with Sports Committee organized carrom tournament on 20th January 2023 for all students. Around 15 students registered for singles tournament and 19 groups for doubles tournament. The tournament began at 9 am with ribbon cutting at Gymkhana on 4th floor. There was a match even for the faculty and even our principal participated in a friendly game. Dipankar Bharti of SYBCOM was winner of singles tournament and Dipankar Bharti and Vivek Yadav of SYBCOM were declared winners for doubles tournament.

Commerce department had organized a session on “Various topics related to Youth: Legal service, international youth day, anti-ragging laws, traffic rules and observance of birth anniversary day of Mother Teressa” in association with Taluka Legal Services Committee, Kalyan on Friday 26th August 2022 at 11 am for students of FYBCOM, FYBBI and FYBAF. Judicial Magistrate First Class Shri P. B. Taur was the chief guest of the session, along with Panel Advocate Trupti Patil, Traffic department API Atul Chaudhary and Head Constable Sunil Sangle. Rajendra Bangar sir also joined them. They spoke about basic traffic rules and regulations that should be followed by all for their safety, as well as safety of others. They also informed students about the importance of wearing seat belts, helmets and driving safe while on highways as well as local roads. They shared experiences of cases where mistake of the driver led to accidents, causing harm to self as well as family. Total 141 students attended the session.

Department of Commerce organised ‘Video Screening’ on the occasion of Green Consumer Day for FYBCOM, SYBCOM, TYBCOM students on Saturday, 28th September 2022. Videos of Green Consumers were shown to students, where they came to know that a green consumer is someone who is very concerned about the environment and, therefore, only purchases products that are environmentally friendly or eco-friendly. Students were encouraged to purchase only eco-friendly products which does not pollute the environment.

This program highlighted the problems of consumerism and its impact on the environment. Students came to know that products with little or no packaging, are made from natural ingredients and products that are made without causing pollution are all examples of eco-friendly products. And they were informed to buy products those are made from recycled materials.

114 Male beneficiaries and 131 Female beneficiaries that is 245 students from BCOM actively participated in this activity.

Calibre Commerce Club of Department of Commerce organised “Video Screening” Competition for FYBCOM students on Saturday, 10th September 2022 in the college Auditorium. The event was judged by Mr. Mukul Kulkarni, faculty- Department of Accountancy and Finance.

Students were given various topics for video presentation. Some students created the videos while some presented videos from Youtube. The purpose of the event was to make students more creative and work on their presentation skills. The participants were judged on four criteria namely Creativity, Presentation Skills, Quality and Content.

Total 20 students benefitted from the activity.

Calibre Commerce Club of The SIA College of Higher Education Dombivli East had organised an activity known as “Express Yourself” on occasion of International Youth Day for FYBCOM students. The event was scheduled on 13th August 2022 .
The Purpose of this event was to make the student write their Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges on a paper and decorate it as per their interest. Students were given the time span of 1 week to submit the activity from 13th August 2022 to 21st August 2022.
Total 33 students participated in the event.

Calibre Commerce Club organized a Video Screening on 12th August 2022 on International Youth Day. This year’s theme for International Youth Day 2022 is “Intergenerational solidarity: creating a world for all ages.” Students were made aware of importance of International Youth Day by showing them video. The purpose of this was to generate awareness about certain cultural and legal issues surrounding youth. 304 students attended the Video Screening out of which 164 were girls and 140 were boys.

FYBCOM Orientation

Name of the Event: FYBCOM Orientation

Venue: Classroom 304 and 305

Orientation session was organized for FYBCOM students for the batch of 2022-23 on Saturday, July 16, 2022 at 10.30 am. Students were divided into A and B division, and were asked to sit in 304 and 305 respectively. The orientation started with principal mam addressing the students, welcoming them on their first day, followed by teachers providing information regarding various aspects. Students of SY and TY also shared their experiences. Committee orientations followed. Students were given chocolate and welcome letter. They were asked to fill feedback survey link before parting. The session ended on a pleasant note.

77 male and 83 female students benefitted from the session.

Alumni of BCOM department Ms. Ragini Iyer was invited to orient FYBCOM students about the BCOM Programme. Ragini highlighted the importance of academics and the overall grade for venturing into higher education as well as job, she explained the importance of participation in various college committees and how they help to mould once personality, she also stressed on enrollment for short term and certification courses offered by the college. She focused on the importance of Microsoft office, specially Microsoft Excel for better job opportunities.
Total 187 students attended the orientation in which 86 were male and 101 were female students.

Powerpoint presentation competition was organized for students of SY and TY BCOM on Thursday 28th July 2022 at 10.30 am in room 304.
The purpose of this power point presentation competition was to provide an opportunity to students to develop presentation skills, to overcome stage fear, to learn to work in teams.
A total of 13 groups participated in the power point presentation competition consisting of 43 students out of which 26 were girls participants & 17 were boys participants.

Mrs. Radhika Bhosale, college counsellor, organized a basic counselling session on self-awareness for the students of SYBCOM and TYBCOM students. She showed a documentary on importance of sharing emotions, understanding oneself, how to track emotions and how to communicate.

It was an interesting and engaging session for our students.

Calibre Commerce Club Celebrated Foundation Day of Reserve Bank of India on 1st April, 2022 at 10.00 am. FYBCOM students were shown documentary on the history, origin, life and functions of RBI. The documentary contains history behind the formation of RBI and need for transformation in the role of RBI.

The purpose of celebration of foundation day of RBI was to create awareness among the students about the origin and history of Reserve Bank of India and how over the period of time RBI role has evolved from shareholders bank to the bankers’ bank. RBI has performed an epic role in the banking sector and in the growth and development of financial structure of our country. Financial reforms have transformed the RBI from regulator to facilitator.

The Powerpoint presentation competition conducted by Calibre Commerce club started at 11.00 am sharp with a warm welcome speech given by our student Pranjal Gulekar. She welcomed our Judges, Teachers and Students and also read the rules for the competition.

The students started presenting the topic selected by them. After each student presented, the judges asked the questions relevant to their topic.

The students were judged on 5 criteria they were Quality of the Content, Presentation Skills, Clarity, Confidence and Time management. 

Yash Avinash Kadam and Shrishti Sawant emerged as winners of the competition.

The Department of Commerce of College arranged an online session on “Basics of Accounting: Consignment Accounting” on 26th March, 2022 for FYBCOM students in their respective classrooms aired on Microsoft Teams. The Resource Person was Dr. Kudshiya Raza, Assistant Professor from St. Aloysius College, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. The session started with basics of accounting and later specialized with Consignment accounting. She made session engaged by solving practical problems on computation of Commission in Consignment Accounting.

Students were motivated to ask questions. The session was very interactive, informative and was a good learning experience for all.

 

Experiental Learning

Two students of FYBCOM got the opportunity to set up a food stall during days celebration on 17th and 19th March 2022. The shared their experience in class on 6th April 2022.

They discussed how they understood concepts of economics better as they set their own price, and then changed prices to increase demand, how they reached break even point by managing sales on both the days. They were thankful to be given the opportunity by the college.

The main intention of conducting this session was to make Positive, Powerful and permanent transformation in the life of students. Further to make the students aware about how to prepare their mind for being successful. Also to give them information about the basis of success like Burning Desire, Big Goals, Passion, Focus, Sacrifice and to train them how to set the SMART GOALS and to Achieve them. It was an enlightening and attitude changing talk. 115 students benefitted from the session.
